Policy

A policy is a deliberate system of principles to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes. A policy is a statement of intent and is implemented as a procedure or protocol.

Registration of Interest (ROI)

This is similar to an Expression of Interest (EOI) in that it is used to identify suppliers interested in, and capable of, delivering the required goods or services. Potential suppliers are asked to provide information on their capability to do the work. It is usually the first stage of a multi-stage tender process.

Advertising

Advertising is a form of communication used to promote or sell something to potential customers about products and services.

Invitation to Treat - ITT

In simple terms an ITT is an invitation to another person to make an offer to contract. An invitation to treat is an invitation for customers to submit an offer and indicates a willingness to deal.

Due Diligence

The detailed process of reviewing and analysing the capacity of a bidding organisation to meet future contract performance requirements.

Intellectual Property

A generic term for non-physical property rights such as patents, trademarks, design, confidential information, copyrights, and know how.

Mentorship Programs

Mentorship is a relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person.

Contract Variation

An addition or alteration to the terms of a contract that is mutually agreed by both parties to the contract

E-tendering

Secure electronic systems specifically designed to allow Purchasers to conduct their procurement activities via the internet.

Supplier Code of Conduct

The Supplier code of conduct sets out expectations of suppliers, their subsidiaries and subcontractors. Companies may elect to not work with or cease to work with suppliers who do not meet these expectations.

Code of Conduct

The code that outlines how companies apply the principles and values that underly how they work and how they expect external stakeholders to work with them

Mineralogy

The mineral properties for a given ore body.

In situ

In the natural or original position. Applied to a rock, soil, or fossil when occurring in the situation in which it was originally formed or deposited.

P80

The 80% passing size of the product.

Expression of Interest (EOI)

Identifies potential suppliers interested in, and capable of, delivering the required goods or services. Potential suppliers are asked to provide information on their capability to do the work. It is usually the first stage of a multi-stage tender process.

Liberation

The separation of valuable minerals from the gangue.

Fracture

A general term to include any kind of discontinuity in a body of rock if produced by mechanical failure, whether by shear stress or tensile stress. Fractures include faults, shears, joints, and planes of fracture cleavage.

Jameson Cell

A type of naturally aspirated cell which is used to clean the froth after the initial extraction through the rougher cells.

Purchasers

Also referred to as procurers. Any organisation that releases or advertises a request to purchase goods and/or services.

Discharge Screen (Shenck Screen)

Removes any oversize material from the ball mill and recycles it to the SAG mill feed conveyor.

Angle of dip

The angle at which strata or mineral deposits are inclined to the horizontal plane.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx)

Formed when nitrogen (N2) combines with oxygen (O2) in the burning of fossil fuels, from the natural degradation of vegetation, and from the use of chemical fertilizers. A significant component of acid deposition and photochemical smog. The primary source of nitrogen oxide emissions is automobile exhaust.

Electronic Tender Box (ETB)

A fully secure online version of a physical tender response box.

TSF Spiggots

Discharge points for the slurry into the TSF.

Initial Expression of Interest - IEO

When high value public sector contracts (tenders) are advertised, they usually start with asking parties interested in bidding to write and express their interest in bidding.

Composite Particle

Particles which are composed of two or more minerals.

Indemnity

A legal principle holding that the individual being recompensed under an insurance policy should be restored to the approximate financial position he or she was in prior to the loss.

Gangue

The valueless or unwanted components of an ore deposit.

Detonator

A device containing a small detonating charge that is used for detonating an explosive, including, but not limited to, blasting caps, exploders, electric detonators, and delay electric blasting caps.

Contractor

Respondent whose offer has been accepted by the Purchaser.

Hopper

A bin or funnel that is loaded from the top and which discharges through a door or chute at the bottom.

Award Notice

An email notice advising of the successful bidder. Sent at the Purchaser's discretion via an electronic system.

Electronic means

Any method of communication or provision of information using electronic technology.

Contract terms

A contractual term is "Any provision forming part of a contract". Each term gives rise to a contractual obligation, breach of which can give rise to litigation. Not all terms are stated expressly and some terms carry less legal gravity as they are peripheral to the objectives of the contract.

Overburden

Layers of soil and rock covering a coal seam. In surface mining operations, overburden is removed prior to mining using large equipment. When mining has been completed, it is either used to backfill the mined areas or is hauled to an external dumping and/or storage site.

Scats

Any oversized rocks and/or steel balls removed from the milled ore.

Tram

Used in connection with moving self-propelled mining equipment. A tramming motor may refer to an electric locomotive used for hauling loaded trips or it may refer to the motor in a cutting machine that supplies the power for moving or tramming the machine

Crusher

A machine for crushing rock or other materials. Among the various types of crushers are the ball mill, gyratory crusher, Handsel mill, hammer mill, jaw crusher, rod mill, rolls, stamp mill, and tube mill.

Elevator pitch

it is a short, 1 to 2 sentence statement that defines who you work with (target market) and the general area in which you help them.

Tender Box (Physical)

A secure location within which tenders, offers, quotations or bids are placed.

Slip

A fault. A smooth joint or crack where the strata have moved on each other.

Reserve

That portion of the identified coal or mineral deposit resource that can be economically mined at the time of determination. The reserve is derived by applying a recovery factor to that component of the identified resource designated as the reserve base or proven reserves.

Public Tender

Tender advertised to the public market.

Cyclone

A conical chamber, which separates coarse and fine particles through the actions of centrifugal, force and pressure. The fine particles are directed to the overflow of the cyclone and the coarse particles are directed to the underflow.

Dashboard

Your homepage when you log into an e-procurement system. This provides options and links to the system features available to you.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

A document which is used to record the intentions of parties in a less formal way than a conventional contract document, it is not legally binding unless it specifically states that it is intended to be enforceable in the courts.

Request for Information (RFI)

A written or electronic request for information to gain a more detailed understanding of the supplier market and the range of solutions and technologies that may be available. It may be used to develop documentation for a future tender.

Geologist

One who studies the constitution, structure, and history of the earth's crust, conducting research into the formation and dissolution of rock layers, analysing fossil and mineral content of layers, and endeavouring to fix historical sequence of development by relating characteristics to known geological influences (historical geology).

Evaluation Criteria

Standards of judgement, and ranking of importance, used to assess offers and compare alternatives put forward by respondents to a Request.

Misfire

The complete or partial failure of a blasting charge to explode as planned.

Procurement Portal

A website provided to a Purchaser (third party) for the management of online procurement.

Prequalification Audit

A site audit to verify that existing processes and qualifications are legitimate. In particular, they assess competency, training, and safety of staff and contractors, risk and safety management and environmental management.

Value Proposition

a clear statement of the tangible results a customer gets from using your products or services.

Procurement Plan

A project management tool that provides a framework for procurement. The procurement plan outlines the key issues that both determine and impact on the procurement strategy and method adopted.

Privacy Statement

A privacy policy is a statement or a legal document (in privacy law) that discloses some or all of the ways a party gathers, uses, discloses, and manages a customer or client's data. A company may also require suppliers to adhere to privacy requirements relating to the activities and information they have access to during the contracted period.

Crusher Spider

A support system for the crusher shaft.

Primer (booster)

A package or cartridge of explosive which is designed specifically to transmit detonation to other explosives and which does not contain a detonator.

Conveyor

An apparatus for moving material from one point to another in a continuous fashion.

Load

To place explosives in a drill hole. Also, to transfer broken material into a haulage device.

F80

The 80% passing size of the feed.

Factor of safety

The ratio of the ultimate breaking strength of the material to the force exerted against it. If a rope will break under a load of 6000 lbs., and it is carrying a load of 2000 lbs., its factor of safety is 6000 divided by 2000 which equals 3.

Price

The price element of an offer or bid made in response to a Purchasers request for goods and/or services.

OSA

On Stream Analyser. Takes on-line measurements of the copper, iron, solids, and flow rate of a stream, as well as the overall copper recoveries of selected streams.

Waste

That rock or mineral which must be removed from a mine to keep the mining scheme practical, but which has no value.

Drill

A machine utilizing rotation, percussion (hammering), or a combination of both to make holes. If the hole is much over 0.4m in diameter, the machine is called a borer.

Ball Mill

Grinding mill that uses steel balls as the primary source of grinding media.

Compression

The increase of stress levels on the rock to be crushed. When stress levels are high enough it causes the rock to fracture.

Invitation to Tender - ITT

The paper or electronic documentation issued to organisations invited to tender for a contract. Typically, it includes a background, rules of tender, contract specification, questions or information required and a draft contact.

Mill Liners

Sacrificial steel sections inside the mill shell, which are replaced at regular intervals. The liners are designed to wear while protecting the shell of the mill.

Mining Engineer

A person qualified by education, training, and experience in mining engineering. A trained engineer with knowledge of the science, economics, and arts of mineral location, extraction, concentration and sale, and the administrative and financial problems of practical importance in connection with the profitable conduct of mining.

Bidder

A Supplier making a formal response to offer goods and/or services.

Supplier

The person or organisation seeking to supply goods and/or services in response to a Purchaser request. Some / many companies differential that a contractor provides services whilst a supplier provides goods and equipment.

Mill Load

The amount of material inside the mill. Can refer to ore and/or grinding balls present.

Permit

As it pertains to mining, a document issued by a regulatory agency that gives approval for mining operations to take place.

Borehole

Any deep or long drill-hole, usually associated with a diamond drill.

Dip

The inclination of a geologic structure (bed, vein, fault, etc.) from the horizontal; dip is always measured downwards at right angles to the strike.

Collar

The term applied to the timbering or concrete around the mouth or top of a shaft. The beginning point of a shaft or drill hole at the surface.

Girth Gear

Responsible for rotating the mill shell.

ROM Pad

The Run Of Mine Pad - the place where all ore is stockpiled prior to being fed into the crusher.

Addendum

Additional information about a Request/Tender, provided to all registered potential respondents after the initial advertising date.

Entrainment

The entrapment of one substance by another, one of the mechanisms of NGS recovery where very fine particles are carried out to the concentrate with the water.

Prequalification

Prequalification, or contractor prequalification, represents the minimum quality, financial, safety, environmental and management standards that a client requires contractors to have in place before they are allowed to quote for specific jobs and undertake work on behalf of that organisation.

Total contract value

The estimated total value of the contract for the entire life of the contract, including extensions.

Aquifer

A water-bearing bed of porous rock, often sandstone.

Respondent

Someone who has submitted a bid response or offer in response to a Request.

Crusher Mantle

The principle moving part of the crusher. Able to move up and down to achieve required crusher gap

Thickening

The removing of water from slurry. Performed via settling of solid particles.

Grinding

The process of further reducing rock size after the initial crushing. Prominent hill grinding circuit consists of a SAG mill and a ball mill.

Drainage

The process of removing surplus ground or surface water either by artificial means or by gravity flow.

Tramp Metal Magnet

A large magnet used to remove ferrous metals in the feed, to avoid damaging equipment downstream.

Request for Application (RFA)

Notice that grants are available to fund certain types of programs. RFAs usually released by a government agency or non-profit organisation and usually outline what types of programs are eligible, what the expectations are and how applications are submitted and reviewed.

COS

(Course Ore Stockpile) Refers to the stockpile produced from the output of the crusher

Thickener

A circular tank where thickening occurs due to gravitational separation. Contains a raking mechanism which is used to move thickened slurry to the discharge.

Flocculant

Chemicals used to promote the joining of suspended particles in liquid, forming bigger particles which are then able to be more easily filtered, or removed via sedimentation.

Ground control

The regulation and final arresting of the closure of the walls of a mined area. The term generally refers to measures taken to prevent roof falls or coal bursts.

Private/Select Tender

Tenders advertised to selected suppliers by invitation only. Not advertised on a public basis.

SEX - Sodium Ethyl Xanthate.

A type of collector used during the flotation process. Most commonly used collector at Prominent Hill.

Debrief

A post-tender feedback process conducted by the Purchaser to unsuccessful bidders/respondents.
