Commodities
What is being mined?
South Australia is a major producer of copper, uranium, zircon and emerging in the extraction of magnetite iron ore for green steel.
The state also produces gold, silver, salt, silica sand, gypsum, dimension stone and opal. With emerging projects focussing on critical minerals.
Silver
Silver is a versatile mineral used in electronics, jewelry, and industrial applications. Its conductivity, reflectivity, and antibacterial properties make it valuable for technology, medical, and manufacturing uses.
Mineral Sands
Mineral sands are sands containing valuable minerals like zircon, rutile, and ilmenite, used in ceramics, paints, plastics, and technology. South Australia is a major global producer.
Iron
Iron is a fundamental mineral used in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure. Its strength and versatility make it essential for steel production, supporting buildings, transport, and industrial development worldwide.
Uranium
Uranium is a critical mineral used as fuel for nuclear energy. Its high energy density makes it essential for power generation and supporting low-carbon electricity production.
Copper
Copper is a key mineral for electricity, construction, and clean energy, essential for modern infrastructure and electric vehicles.
Gold
Gold is a valuable mineral used in jewelry, electronics, and finance. Its rarity, durability, and conductivity make it essential for investment, technology, and modern industry.

Everyday Life & Mining
Mineral products are essential to modern life, supporting everyday items such as smartphones, transport, buildings and food production. As populations grow and technology advances, demand for these resources continues to rise.

This is driven by emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and the rapid expansion of data center's, which power cloud computing, streaming and artificial intelligence and rely on materials like lithium, copper, silicon and steel. Highlight the critical role of mining in supporting both daily life and future innovation.
Smartphones
Require lithium, cobalt and copper for batteries and wiring.
Computers & Devices
Use silicon, aluminium and gold for processing and connectivity.
Transport (car's including electric vehicles)
Depend on steel for structure and lithium and nickel for electric batteries.
Buildings and Infrastructure
Use iron (steel), copper and cement for construction and electrical systems.
Food Production
Relies on mined minerals like phosphate for fertilisers to grow crops.
Renewable Energy
Solar panels and wind turbines require copper and rare earth elements.
Data Centers
Power cloud computing, AI and streaming using silicon, copper and steel.

The Mine Life Cycle
Understanding the mine life cycle is key to recognising opportunities in the resources sector. Every mine progresses through a series of stages, from exploration to closure, and each stage involves different activities that shape the types of roles available.
1. Exploration & Appraisal
The initial stage focused on stakeholder engagement, identifying and assessing mineral resources through surveys, drilling, and sampling to determine if a project is viable.
2. Design
Planning how the mine will operate, cultural heritage and environmental protection priorities, refining mine plans, securing investment, and determining the most efficient and sustainable way to extract resources.
3. Development
Detailed studies, approvals, ongoing community engagement and contractor procurement are undertaken to prepare the site for construction.
4. Construction
Building the mine’s infrastructure, processing facilities, and site services to transform the project into an operational mine.
5. Operations
The mine is fully active, with resources extracted, processed, and transported as part of ongoing production.
6. Decommissioning
Operations wind down, equipment is shut down, and the site begins transitioning out of active use.
7. Closure & Remediation
The final stage focuses on restoring and rehabilitating the land, ensuring it is safe and stable for future use.
